Five-story Stone Pagoda at Jeongnimsa Temple Site, Buyeo
부여 정림사지 오층석탑 · 扶餘 定林寺址 五層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe temple is gone; the pagoda is what is left. Five storeys stand on a single low platform, the corner pillars tapering as they rise and the roof slabs reaching out thin and lifting slightly at their tips. It translates a timber pagoda into stone without becoming heavy, which is harder than it sounds and is why this and the Iksan pagoda — the only two Baekje stone pagodas that survive — are the reference points for everything that came after. Read the first storey and you will find Chinese characters cut into it by Su Dingfang, the Tang general who destroyed Baekje in 660, recording his victory on the monument of the kingdom he had just ended. For a long time the pagoda was wrongly called after that inscription. The name has been corrected; the inscription is still there.
