Three-story Stone Pagoda of Bulguksa Temple, Gyeongju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Bulguksa was founded in 751 by Kim Dae-seong, who according to the Samguk Yusa built Seokguram for his parents in a former life and this temple for his parents in this one. He died in 774 with it unfinished and the state completed it. This is the western of the two pagodas in the main courtyard. Its full name means the pagoda of Shakyamuni preaching, and it is shortened to Seokgatap. Dabotap stands opposite because the Lotus Sutra has the Buddha of the past appear beside the Buddha of the present to confirm that what he teaches is true — the two pagodas are that scene, built. In 1966 thieves damaged it trying to get at the reliquary, and it was dismantled for repair. Inside was the Great Dharani Sutra, printed from woodblocks before 751 and the oldest woodblock print known anywhere in the world.
