Four Lion Three-story Stone Pagoda of Hwaeomsa Temple, Gurye
구례 화엄사 사사자 삼층석탑 · 求禮 華嚴寺 四獅子 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHwaeomsa was founded in 544 and is the principal temple of the Jeolla provinces, with a stone lantern, two five-storey pagodas and a lion pagoda all designated in their own right. This one stands on high ground north-west of the compound, in pine trees, facing a stone lantern across a small terrace. The lower base is carved with heavenly figures — playing instruments, holding flowers, dancing, praising — in relief. The upper base is the reason people come: four lions, two male and two female, stand at the corners in place of columns, all facing forward with their mouths open and their teeth showing. A figure stands enclosed by them, said to be the mother of Yeongi, the monk who founded the temple. The lantern opposite has a matching figure kneeling with a cup raised, said to be Yeongi himself, offering tea to her across the gap.
