Octagonal Nine-story Stone Pagoda of Woljeongsa Temple, Pyeongchang
평창 월정사 팔각 구층석탑 · 平昌 月精寺 八角 九層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krUnder Goryeo the strict Unified Silla proportions relax, and this is where you can see it happen. Two octagonal base storeys carry nine body storeys, finished with a metal finial. The usual pagoda narrows sharply as it rises. This one does not: from the second storey up the heights stay almost the same, so it climbs rather than tapers. Small niches for images are cut into the four faces of the first storey. The roof stones have no stepped courses beneath them, just a plain finish, and a wind bell hangs at each of the eight corners of each roof — seventy-two of them, and you will hear them before you see the pagoda. The finial survives complete, stone below and gilt bronze above, which is rare. In front of it a stone bodhisattva kneels on one knee with an offering, facing the pagoda across the terrace.
