Geumsansa Temple on Moaksan Mountain was founded in 600 under King Beop of Baekje and rebuilt in 766 by the monk Jinpyo. Mireukjeon Hall burned in the Japanese invasion of 1597, was rebuilt in 1635, and has come down through several repairs since. It houses a colossal Maitreya and is also called Yonghwajeon, Sanhojeon and Jangnyukjeon. The ground storey carries the board Daejabojeon, the second Yonghwajihoe, the third Mireukjeon. The first and second storeys are five bays by four and the third three by two, under a hipped-and-gabled roof that takes the shape of the character 八 seen from the side. The brackets carrying the eaves sit between the columns as well as on them. At the four corners of every storey slender posts prop the weight of the roof. Inside, all three storeys open into one space. Its tallest column is not a single trunk but several pieced together, which is unusual. The whole is vast and stands very steadily.
