Five-story Stone Pagoda in Tamni-ri, Uiseong
의성 탑리리 오층석탑 · 義城 塔里里 五層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA Unified Silla five-storey pagoda standing in the village of Tamni-ri. Five storeys rise from a single low tier, and its structure is unusual: it combines the manner of a brick pagoda, with stone dressed into brick-like blocks, and the techniques of timber building. The base is floored with several stones, and after timber practice its middle and corner columns are each separate stones. The first storey is tall, and from the second the height drops sharply; a niche for an image is set into the first body stone. The roof stones are stepped both beneath and on top, as on a brick pagoda — six steps above, five below — and lift slightly at the four corners, like the eaves of a timber roof. It adapts timber forms in every part while showing brick-pagoda technique throughout. With the brick-imitating pagoda at Bunhwangsa Temple in Gyeongju, it is valuable evidence for the pagodas of early Unified Silla.
