Gold Crown and Diadem Ornaments from Geumgwanchong Tomb
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

A Silla gold crown found in Geumgwanchong Tomb at Noseo-dong, Gyeongju, 44.4 cm high with a headband 19 cm across. Silla crowns came as an inner and an outer crown; this is the outer, in the classic Silla form. On the front of the round headband stand three ornaments shaped like the character 出 in three tiers, and at the back left and right two ornaments like antlers. Dotted lines decorate the band and the 出 ornaments, and many jade-green comma-shaped jewels and bead ornaments hang from them on gold wire at regular intervals. At either end hang two pendants on fine rings with gold chains, with leaf-shaped ornaments at intervals and jade at their tips. A cap thought to be the inner crown was found outside the coffin. It is a triangular cap cut from thin sheet gold, with a long ornament like a pair of bird's wings fixed on top. Placing bird wings on a cap reflects the beliefs of the Three Kingdoms period and is thought to be connected with shamanism. In both its basic form and its technique the crown is a masterpiece that represents the Silla crown.
