Gold Buckle from Seogam-ri, Pyeongyang
평양 석암리 금제 띠고리 · 平壤 石巖里 金製 鉸具

A gold buckle excavated from tomb no. 9 at Seogam-ri, Daedong, South Pyeongan, 9.4 cm long and 6.4 cm wide, the gold fitting that joined a belt. The head end is broad and round, with a curved slot inside it parallel to the edge and a hook to fasten the belt. Sheet gold was laid over a mould and hammered to raise the outline of dragons, and one large dragon and six small ones were then built up in gold wire and granules. Twisted gold wire runs round the edge, with triangles of even width inside it. Between the dragons, petal-shaped outlines were filled with jade; seven survive. The granulation — decoration built from gold wire and grains — is superb, and the placing of the seven dragons has a real rhythm.
