White Porcelain Jar with Grape and Monkey Design in Underglaze Iron
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

A late Joseon white porcelain jar with a mouth of moderate height, a swelling shoulder and a body that narrows gradually towards the foot. It is 30.8 cm high, 15 cm across the mouth and 16.4 cm across the base. A pattern rings the upright mouth, and a grapevine is painted on the body with an assured hand. The lively leaves and stems of the vine, drawn in dark pigment, show that this is not a potter's drawing but the painterly work of a professional painter. The whole body is evenly covered with a milky white glaze with a faint blue tinge. With the white porcelain jar with grapevine design in underglaze iron at Ewha Womans University Museum (a national treasure), it is one of the representative white porcelain jars of the Joseon period.
