Celadon Prunus Vase with Incised Lotus and Scroll Design
청자 음각연화당초문 매병 · 靑磁 陰刻蓮花唐草文 梅甁

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA Goryeo celadon prunus vase (maebyeong), 43.9 cm high, 7.2 cm across the mouth and 15.8 cm across the base. The maebyeong form has its origins in Tang and Song China, but after it arrived in early Goryeo it developed in curve and volume in a direction different from China's, creating a beauty distinctive to Goryeo. The small, low but firm mouth, the ample shoulder and body, the slender waist and the slight outward flare at the foot mark this as typical Goryeo ware. The mouth is angular, as usual on maebyeong, and turns slightly outward. A lotus scroll covers the body, large and vigorous. A clear, transparent pale green-grey celadon glaze is applied evenly all over, with a net of crackle on the surface. The feel of the glaze and the form suggest it was fired at the Sadang-ri kiln in Daegu-myeon, Gangjin, South Jeolla, and it appears to date from the twelfth century, the height of plain Goryeo celadon.
