Celadon Jar with Inlaid Peony Design
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

A Goryeo celadon jar, 20.1 cm high, 20.7 cm across the mouth and 14.8 cm across the base. A single peony stem decorates the front and the back of the body. The flowers are drawn down to the veins of their leaves, and each side is filled with a single large motif, which gives an impression of boldness and openness. The flowers are inlaid in white and the leaves in black, the leaves arranged symmetrically above, below and to either side of the flower. The glaze is a grey-blue tinged with clear green, applied very thin and even. The glaze and form suggest the twelfth century. With its large flowers and leaves, the strong contrast of black and white gives the jar a fresh, open look, and its effective use of broad-area inlay shows the inlay technique at its most accomplished.
