Celadon Melon-shaped Bottle with Inlaid Peony and Chrysanthemum Design
청자 상감모란국화문 참외모양 병 · 靑磁 象嵌牡丹菊花文 瓜形 甁

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA melon-shaped vase made at the height of Goryeo celadon, 25.6 cm high, 9.1 cm across the mouth and 9.4 cm across the base. The mouth flares like a trumpet above the long neck in the shape of a melon flower, and two horizontal lines are inlaid in white clay round the middle of the neck. Bottles of this form began in Tang China but were given a Korean character in the Goryeo period. The body is shaped like a melon, divided into eight lobes. A raised line rings the join between neck and body, marking a clear boundary. Just below the neck is a band of eight flower buds inlaid in white. Around the middle of the body, peony and chrysanthemum motifs alternate, one on each of the eight lobes, and the lower body is inlaid with lotus in black and white. It stands on a tall foot pleated like a skirt. The glaze is somewhat uneven and rather dark in colour, but the proportion and balance of the whole are stable. It was probably made at the kiln site at Yucheon-ri, Boan-myeon, Buan, North Jeolla; the celadon melon-shaped bottle designated a national treasure has the same form.
