Three-story Stone Pagoda at Jinjeonsa Temple Site, Yangyang
양양 진전사지 삼층석탑 · 襄陽 陳田寺址 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA three-storey stone pagoda standing on the old site of Jinjeonsa. Jinjeonsa is said to have been founded by the State Preceptor Doui in the later eighth century, in Unified Silla; the temple's name was established from roof-tile fragments inscribed 'Jinjeon' found around the site. The pagoda has the usual Unified Silla form, three storeys on a two-tier base. The lower tier of the base carries celestials in robes that seem ready to fly, and the upper tier the Eight Guardians of the Dharma, sitting on clouds and holding weapons, powerfully carved. Each body stone and each roof stone is a single block, and the first-storey body stone carries Buddhas in various poses. The four corners of the eaves lift slightly, giving the roof stones a light beauty, and their undersides have five steps each. On top of the third roof stone only the base plate remains; the finial is entirely lost. Balanced overall, with the lift at the corners of its roof stones adding a lightness, it is one of the representative stone pagodas of Unified Silla. The beautiful carving on its base and the refined Buddhas of the first storey recall how splendid Jinjeonsa once was.
