Five-story Stone Pagoda in Jukjang-ri, Gumi
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

A stone pagoda at the site of Jukjangsa, about 2 km west of the town of Seonsan; stones and roof-tile fragments scattered around it show that buildings stood there. It is built of more than a hundred stones from ground stone to finial, and at 10 m it is the tallest five-storey pagoda in brick-pagoda form in Korea. It is a massive pagoda: five storeys on a two-tier base, with a finial on top. On the south face of the first-storey body stone is a niche that seems to have held a Buddha, with traces round it where a door was hung. The upper and lower surfaces of the roof stones are stepped, as on a brick pagoda. At the top the base plate of the finial survives. It has the two-tier base typical of Unified Silla, but the body stones without carved pillars and the form of the roof stones imitate a brick pagoda. It seems to belong to the line of stone pagodas in imitation of brick that were fashionable around Andong and Uiseong, and it shows well the fine form of the grand, refined Unified Silla stone pagoda.
