A mirror made in mother-of-pearl inlay, said to have been excavated in the Gaya region, 18.6 cm across and 0.6 cm thick. It is the oldest mother-of-pearl work found in Korea, and particularly notable because a mirror in the same technique is kept in the Shosoin in Japan. A beaded band rings the edge of the back, with small flowers within it, their petals set with amber. The whole back is decorated with lavish peonies, with a lion and a bird on either side, and blue jade set in thick lacquer between the motifs. Like the mother-of-pearl mirror in the Shosoin, it is thought to date from about the eighth to tenth century, and it is valuable as the oldest mother-of-pearl work in Korea.
