The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty set out in chronological order the history of twenty-five reigns over 472 years (1392–1863), from King Taejo to King Cheoljong. To guard against disaster, the finished annals were kept in five archives across the country: the Chunchugwan archive (Seoul), Jeongjoksan (Ganghwa), Taebaeksan (Bonghwa), Odaesan (Pyeongchang) and Jeoksangsan (Muju). The Jeoksangsan copy, not included in the earlier designation, was said only to have been taken to North Korea during the Korean War and kept there; neither the books themselves nor their condition were known. The Jeoksangsan books now identified are four in all: one at the National Museum of Korea and three at the Jangseogak of the Academy of Korean Studies. The book the National Museum of Korea bought at public sale in 2005 (volumes 55–58 of the Gwanghaegun ilgi) carries ownership seals including 'Library of the Yi Royal Household' and 'Held at the Jeoksangsan archive, Muju; donated by the Government-General of Joseon', showing that it was kept in the Jeoksangsan archive at Muju, North Jeolla. With its discovery it could be confirmed that copies from all four archives — Jeongjoksan, Odaesan, Jeoksangsan and Taebaeksan — are held in the country, whole or in part.
