Headrest of the Queen Consort of King Muryeong
무령왕비 베개 · 武寧王妃 頭枕

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA funerary wooden headrest found inside the coffin in the Tomb of King Muryeong, made to support the queen's head: a block of wood, trapezoidal and broad at the top, hollowed in a U at the centre to hold the head. The surface is painted red and laid with gold leaf in a tortoise-shell pattern, and within each cell of the pattern flying celestials, phoenixes flying with spread wings, fish-dragons, lotus and scrolls are drawn in black, white and red gold lines. A pair of wooden phoenix heads, male and female, sits on top at either side; when excavated they had fallen in front of the headrest, and they have been reattached. The king's headrest is almost entirely decayed; only two pieces survive, and its form cannot be made out.
