Buncheong Flat Bottle with Sgraffito Lotus and Fish Design
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

An early Joseon buncheong flask, 22.5 cm high, 5.2 cm across the mouth and 8.6 cm across the base. The body is round and flattened on both faces, with a small mouth. The grey-brown body is coated with white slip and covered thickly in a transparent pale brown glaze. A band of schematic lotus runs round the shoulder below the mouth, and the flat faces are decorated with lotus leaves, lotus flowers and fish. The sides carry lotus in their upper and middle parts and a band of double lotus below. The main technique is sgraffito, scraping away the slip from the ground around the pattern after slipping, combined with incised line for the rest. The contrast of white and grey-brown stands out. The fish among the naturally drawn lotus leaves and buds on the front make it one of the representative works of the sgraffito technique.
