KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The royal certificate given to Jang Yang-su on passing the jinsa examination in 1205, the first year of King Huijong of Goryeo. It is 93.5 cm wide and 45.2 cm high, written on a roll of yellow hemp paper. Jang Yang-su was the eighth-generation descendant of Jang Mal-ik, Lord Munseong, Prince of Uljin, and held offices including deputy of the Privy Council and Minister of Rites; he was the twelfth-generation descendant of Jang Jeong-pil, a founding merit subject of Goryeo. It is a certificate of the same kind as the red and white certificates given to successful candidates in the Joseon examinations. The opening part is lost, so the full text cannot be read, but the offices and surnames of the examiners are recorded. Its form seems to have been adopted from the system of Song China. It is the oldest such certificate to survive, and a precious source for the study of the Goryeo examination system.
