Gilt-bronze Standing Buddha from Sinhwa-ri, Yangpyeong
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

A Buddha 30 cm high found by chance in 1976 while farmland was being levelled at Sinhwa-ri, Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi; many roof-tile fragments and other objects found there show that a temple once stood on the site. The pedestal and mandorla are lost, but it is very well preserved and its gilding almost complete. The face is long and round, giving a sense of fullness, and the neck is very long and thick. The body is very long for the face, an unreal proportion. The robe over both shoulders leaves much of the chest and belly bare, falling in U-shaped folds, and three lines across the chest show an undergarment. The hem of the skirt overlaps in several layers in thick curves; the folds are unusual, and soft and natural. The fingers of both hands are lost, so the gesture is uncertain, but the right hand was probably raised palm outward and the left lowered, fingers down, palm outward. The heavy, simple cylindrical body and plain U-shaped folds seem to reflect Sui China, and since it was found in the Han River basin, then held by Silla, it is thought to be a Silla work.
