Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Surangama Sutra's long title is often shortened to Daebuljeong suneungeomgyeong or Neungeomgyeong. Its central teaching is that the Buddha's words should not merely be understood in the mind but made one's own through direct realisation, and it is a sutra monks must study in their training. This is the translation by Paramiti of Tang with commentary by Jiehuan, printed in ten volumes in ten books in 1462, the eighth year of King Sejo. It is printed from woodblocks, 35.7 cm wide and 22 cm high. It was made the year after the Office for Sutra Publication (Gangyeong dogam) was set up in 1461 to translate Buddhist sutras into Korean and print them, and it is the only example of the office's editions to survive complete. As the first Korean-translated edition from the office, its arrangement and its use of large, medium and small characters became a model for later translated editions, which gives it great value.
