Geumgang jeondo (Complete View of Geumgangsan Mountain) by Jeong Seon
정선 필 금강전도 · 鄭敾 筆 金剛全圖

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA painting of Inner Geumgangsan made in 1734, the tenth year of King Yeongjo, by Gyeomjae Jeong Seon (1676–1759), who opened the true-view style of painting Korea's own landscape from life. It shows the real scenery of Inner Geumgang in ink and light colour, 94.5 cm wide and 130.8 cm high. The composition is circular overall, seen from above. The snow-covered peaks are rendered rough and sharp with vertical strokes drawn downward, Birobong rising high at the top and the Manpokdong valley running down through the centre. In contrast with the dry rocky peaks, soft wooded earthen hills lie on the left, rendered by dots made with the brush laid on its side. At the top are the title, the painter's pen name and his thoughts on the picture. Where landscapes of the time were mostly painted from Chinese models, this was painted from the real Korean scene; it is the largest of Jeong Seon's paintings of Geumgangsan and a masterpiece that shows his true-view manner well.
