White Porcelain Lidded Jar with Plum and Bamboo Design in Underglaze Cobalt Blue
백자 청화매죽문 유개항아리 · 白磁 靑畵梅竹文 有蓋立壺

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAn early Joseon lidded blue-and-white jar, 29.2 cm high, 10.7 cm across the mouth and 14 cm across the base. The mouth rolls outward; the body swells at the shoulder and narrows gradually downward, and the lid has an upright lotus-bud knob. In pale blue, a small, dense band of lotus rings the knob, with seven large dots outside it. The side of the lid has a line above and below with dots between. Simplified lotus bands ring the shoulder and the lower body. The main motif, at the centre of the body, is a single old plum trunk and bamboo, painted with judicious shading. The jar's character lies in boldly simplifying its patterns and using the empty space to set off the main motif. Its form and decoration suggest it was made at the state-run kilns.
