The Yogacarabhumi Sastra, by the Indian bodhisattva Maitreya, was translated by Xuanzang of Tang (602–664) in a hundred volumes arranged in the order of the Thousand Character Classic; this copy is from the first Tripitaka carved in the eleventh century. Volume 17 is from the case marked with the character seup; it is on mulberry paper, 45 cm wide and 28.5 cm high. A first carving, it seems to have been cut and printed in the eleventh century like volume 11 of the Xianyang shengjiao lun (a national treasure). It differs from the later recarving in format and printing records: in this first carving the characters gyeong (敬) and gyeong (竟) each lack a stroke, while the recarving corrects them all. Its block-cutting is finer than the recarving's, and it is among the best preserved of the surviving volumes of the first Tripitaka.
