Celadon Prunus Vase with Incised Lotus Design and Inscription of "Hyomun"
청자 음각‘효문’명 연화문 매병 · 靑磁 陰刻‘孝文’銘 蓮花文 梅甁

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA Goryeo celadon prunus vase (maebyeong), 27.7 cm high, 5.3 cm across the mouth and 10.6 cm across the base. A typical Goryeo maebyeong with a small low mouth, it is balanced, its full shoulder flowing softly downward. The decoration is incised in fine line only: a band of flower buds on the shoulder divides the space, with a lotus scroll within. Four large lotus sprays — flowers, leaves, stems and seed pods, lavish and realistic — are incised round the body. At the base are bands of double lotus and fret. A bright, transparent, calm jade-green glaze is applied evenly. The maker's name, Hyomun, written at one edge of the foot, shows that it was made at the kiln site at Yucheon-ri, Buan, North Jeolla. Outstanding among Goryeo maebyeong in form, decoration and glaze, and certain in its place of making, it shows the height of jade-green celadon in the twelfth century.
