Celadon Bowl with Silver Lip, Lotus and Scroll Design in Relief, and Inlaid Peony Design
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

A Goryeo celadon bowl with a silver band round the rim, 7.7 cm high, 18.7 cm across the mouth and 6.3 cm across the foot. The inside is stamped in relief with lotus scrolls and the outside inlaid simply with peonies, decorating the two faces in different techniques. At the centre of the inside is a circle with a flower in it, lotus scrolls on the sides and a band of scrolls round the rim. On the outside, peonies are inlaid in black and white at three points round the middle. The glaze is a grey-green with a slightly translucent pale blue tone. Using different techniques inside and out mixes the plain celadon style (in which inlay was used on one face only, before inlaid celadon became fully fashionable) with the inlaid celadon style, and as the only such piece it is of high value.
