White Porcelain Octagonal Bottle with Bamboo Design in Underglaze Cobalt Blue
백자 청화죽문 각병 · 白磁 靑畵竹文 角甁

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA Joseon white porcelain bottle whose whole body is faceted into eight sides, 40.6 cm high, 7.6 cm across the mouth and 11.5 cm across the base. It has a long neck, a thick lip, a round body and a high, broad foot. In bright cobalt, a line rings the lower body; on one of two opposite faces a single small bamboo is painted, and on the other a close clump of bamboo, both in spare brushwork. The side of the foot is incised with the character 井, whose meaning is unknown. The faceting, the spare blue decoration and the almost transparent glaze suggest the first half of the eighteenth century. For its free, graceful bamboo, which seems to express the spirit of the scholars of the day, it is counted the representative white porcelain bottle of its time.
