Buncheong Jar with Inlaid Cloud and Dragon Design
분청사기 상감운룡문 항아리 · 粉靑沙器 象嵌雲龍文 立壺

A Joseon buncheong jar whose mouth rolls slightly outward and whose body narrows gradually in a gentle curve from the shoulder. It is 49.7 cm high, 15 cm across the mouth and 21.2 cm across the base, thick-walled and heavy. Using stamping — impressing a pattern repeatedly as with a seal — and inlay, the neck is ringed with chrysanthemums, and three bands of scrolls divide the body into three main parts. The upper part is divided again by a thick line shaped like a flower, and filled above and below with stamped chrysanthemums and waves. A four-clawed dragon and clouds are rendered with vigour round the middle, and a lotus band rings the bottom. A typical buncheong jar of the first half of the fifteenth century, it is outstanding for its stable form and its dragon.
