White Porcelain Lidded Jar
백자 유개항아리 · 白磁 有蓋壺

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJoseon white porcelain jars, one large and one small. The large jar is 34.0 cm high overall, 27.2 cm without its lid, 10.1 cm across the mouth and 13.7 cm across the base; the small one is 12.5 cm high overall, 9.5 cm without its lid, 4.2 cm across the mouth and 5.7 cm across the base. The rim is rolled outward; from the mouth the body widens gradually, swells at the shoulder, and narrows in a full, easy curve to the base. At the centre of each lid is a lotus-bud knob for a handle, with a low step around it. The glaze has a faint blue tinge and is applied evenly inside and out, and with the body it gives a surface colour close to milky white. The form of the mouth, the clay, the glaze, the surface colour and the firing suggest they were made at the state-run kilns at Gwangju, Gyeonggi, in early Joseon. They are works of outstanding quality, with the dignity and suppleness of early Joseon.
