White Porcelain Bottle-shaped Ewer
백자 병형 주전자 · 白磁 甁形 注子

A Joseon white porcelain ewer in the shape of a bottle, 32.9 cm high overall, the bottle 29 cm, 6 cm across the mouth and 11.4 cm across the base. The upright mouth flares slightly, and below a short neck the body widens gradually into a full form weighted low. An angular handle is attached to the body with a small ring, and the lid has a lotus-bud knob and a small ring at the centre of its top. A pale blue glaze covers it evenly. The handle and mouth were made with a different clay and glaze from the body. The clay, glaze and technique suggest a date from the later fifteenth to the earlier sixteenth century, and it seems to have been made at the state-run kilns at Gwangju, Gyeonggi, which produced fine porcelain for the royal household. Its full, neat and dignified body, with a slender little mouth and a thick handle, gives it an elegant feel.
