Documents of Sangwonsa Temple, Pyeongchang
평창 상원사 중창권선문 · 平昌 上院寺 重創勸善文

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIn 1464, the tenth year of King Sejo, the royal preceptor Hyegak Sinmi, with Hagyeol, Hakjo and others, wrote this appeal on refurbishing Sangwonsa to pray for the king's long life; it is kept at Woljeongsa together with the letter King Sejo wrote when, hearing of it, he sent rice, cotton, hemp cloth and iron. Each is in the original classical Chinese with a translation into Korean. The monks' appeal carries the signatures (sugyeol) of Sinmi, Hagyeol and Hakjo, and the king's letter the signatures and seals of Sejo, the crown princess and the crown prince. The Korean translations are famous as the oldest manuscripts in the Korean script. They are a historical source for the relations of Sejo with Sangwonsa and Sinmi, and precious for the study of Korean literature of the time. As the oldest Korean-script documents, and in perfect condition, they were upgraded from treasure to national treasure on 1 January 1997.
