Gilt-bronze Standing Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva from Gyuam-ri, Buyeo
부여 규암리 금동관음보살입상 · 扶餘 窺岩里 金銅觀音菩薩立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA bodhisattva 21.1 cm high, found in 1907 with another standing Avalokitesvara in an iron cauldron buried at a temple site at Gyuam-myeon, Buyeo, South Chungcheong. It wears a crown carved with a small Buddha, and its large round face wears a gentle smile. A thin necklace hangs at the throat, and a garment worn diagonally across the chest is marked by two lines. Strings of jewels hanging from both shoulders cross in an X at the waist around a small lotus. The skirt, folded once at the waist, falls long to the tops of the feet, its folds shown in fine lines on both legs. The right hand holds a small bead lightly between thumb and index finger; the left is lowered, holding the hem of the robe. The pedestal is a double round base carved with lotus, giving a simple feel. The natural smile, well-proportioned body and soft, lively carving show that it is a Baekje image of the early seventh century.
