Jinnamgwan Hall, Yeosu
여수 진남관 · 麗水 鎭南館

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBuilt in 1599 as the guest hall of the Left Jeolla naval command — the station Yi Sun-sin had fought the war from. The original burned in 1598; this building went up the following year and was substantially rebuilt in 1718. It is fifteen bays across and five deep, roughly 790 square metres, which makes it the largest surviving provincial government building in Korea and the largest single-storey timber hall of any kind. Sixty-eight columns carry it. In the second bay from each end the inner column has been moved and replaced by a tall one running straight up to the ridge beam, which is why the interior feels more open than its size suggests. The columns taper, and on the side bays two curved beams push their heads through the main beam above and finish as dragons.
