Sebyeonggwan Hall, Tongyeong
통영 세병관 · 統營 洗兵館

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSebyeonggwan is the central building of the Naval Command (Tongjeyeong). The record of its reconstruction found in a groove of the ridge beam when it was dismantled for repair on 24 October 1963 says it was begun in January of the year eulsa (1605) and its ridge beam raised on 14 July that autumn. For some 290 years after it was built it was the command of the navies of the three provinces of Gyeongsang, Jeolla and Chungcheong; it has been repaired several times since, but it still looks out over the South Sea with the majesty of its day. It is a grand building nine bays wide and five deep, with a hipped-and-gabled roof. The floor inside is laid with boards, and a platform about 45 cm high at the centre of the back made a space for the royal tablet. A red-arrowed gate stands above it; below the middle rail of the rear inner column line a low panel is fitted with folding doors, the space above the rail is closed with boards painted with warriors, and the ceiling is coffered. An early seventeenth-century single-storey timber building, Sebyeonggwan is among the largest buildings in Korea with Gyeonghoeru Pavilion at Gyeongbokgung (a national treasure) and Jinnamgwan in Yeosu (a national treasure), and with Jinnamgwan it is of great historical, scholarly and artistic value.
