Daeungjeon Hall of Bongjeongsa Temple, Andong
안동 봉정사 대웅전 · 安東 鳳停寺 大雄殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBongjeongsa is said by legend to have been founded in 672, the twelfth year of King Munmu of Silla, by the Great Master Neungin; records found there, such as the text on the reconstruction of Geungnakjeon, suggest it was founded by Neungin in the later seventh century. Its main hall, Daeungjeon, enshrines a Shakyamuni triad. Records found when it was dismantled and repaired in 1962 date it to early Joseon. It is three bays wide and three deep, with a hipped-and-gabled roof. It is of the multi-bracket type, with bracket sets on and between the columns; the unornamented shapes of the projecting members show the style of late Goryeo and early Joseon, and the narrow porch floor fitted along the front is unusual. The dancheong painting inside survives well, an important source for the study of the patterns of the time, and its sound, vigorous construction shows well the character of early Joseon architecture.
