Daejangjeon Hall and Rotating Sutra Cases of Yongmunsa Temple, Yecheon
KOGL Type 2Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The Daejangjeon Hall and rotating sutra cases were vowed and made by the Great Seon Master Joeung in 1173, the third year of King Myeongjong of Goryeo, to overcome a national crisis (the rebellion of Kim Bo-dang). Very unusually for an ancient building, the person who vowed it, its date and its purpose are all clearly recorded (in the Record of the Reconstruction of Yongmunsa, 1185). A daejangjeon is generally a building for keeping Buddhist scriptures; that of Yongmunsa is uniquely valuable as the only sutra-repository building in Korea that houses rotating sutra cases. The rotating cases are revolving repositories for Buddhist scriptures, and as a pair they have no parallel in East Asia and are unique in Korea, with absolute rarity and symbolic value.
