Heunginjimun Gate, Seoul
서울 흥인지문 · 서울 興仁之門

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Seoul City Wall was built to protect Hanseongbu, which once housed important state institutions, and Heunginjimun Gate is the eastern gate among the wall's eight gates. It is commonly known as Dongdaemun (East Great Gate); it was built in 1396, the fifth year of King Taejo of Joseon, when the city wall was constructed, rebuilt in 1453, the first year of King Danjong, and the present gate was newly built in 1869, the sixth year of Emperor Gojong. It is a two-storey building five bays wide and two bays deep, with a hip roof that appears trapezoidal when viewed from the front. The bracket sets (gongpo) supporting the roof eaves are placed not only above the columns but also between them, in the dapo style; their slender, delicate form and heavily decorative details clearly show the characteristics of late Joseon architecture. Outside the gate, a semicircular ongseong (an outer bastion wall) was built to protect and reinforce it, a facility rationally designed for defending against attackers. Heunginjimun Gate is the only one of the city wall's eight gates to have such an ongseong, and it clearly displays the architectural style of the late Joseon period.
