Five-story Stone Pagoda in Jangjeong-ri, Ganghwa
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This pagoda had collapsed but was repaired and re-erected in 1960. Much of it is damaged and many components are missing, so the body stones of the third storey and above, the roof stone of the fifth storey, and the finial have all disappeared. It stands on the site of a temple halfway up a low hill, but the scale of the original temple cannot be determined, and no trace remains of how its buildings were laid out. The pagoda consists of a five-storey body set on a single-tier base. The four corners of the base are carved with pillar shapes. In the body of the pagoda, only the first-storey body stone is made of two stone pieces; each storey above it is a single stone. The body stone of the second storey is markedly smaller than that of the first. The underside of each roof stone has four tiers of supporting blocks at the first storey and three tiers at every storey above; the eaves are level but curve up slightly at the four corners. Unfortunately, because the ridge of the eaves was broken when the pagoda collapsed, it is impossible to know precisely how far it originally curved upward. Overall the pagoda gives a heavy impression: many of the decorative details usual to each part have been omitted, and much of it is rendered in a formal, simplified manner. It inherits the style of Silla stone pagodas in a transformed shape that is typical of Goryeo-period stone pagodas, and is thought to have been built in the late Goryeo period.
