Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Joseon-period bell was cast by the Monk Sain, who was active in the Gyeonggi-do and Gyeongsang-do regions during the reign of King Sukjong. An outstanding eighteenth-century monk and craftsman, the Monk Sain combined the traditional casting techniques of Silla bells with forms of his own invention. Eight of his works survive today, each with distinct features. This bell is the earliest among those he made, with a round loop at the top for hanging it. On the shoulder, forty upright lotus petals carved with figures form a broad band. Below this band are four square yeongwak, the raised frames that enclose the bell's bosses, each holding five bosses rather than the usual nine, and between the yeongwak are carved dharani, the sacred words of the Buddha — a distinctive feature of this bell. Although modest in size, it shows the characteristics of the Monk Sain's early work and is important material for the study of late Joseon bells and the community of bell-casting craftsmen.
