This Joseon-period bell was cast by the Monk Sain, a monk-craftsman active in Gyeonggi-do and Gyeongsang-do provinces during the reign of King Sukjong. Sain was an outstanding eighteenth-century monk and master bell-founder who combined traditional Korean bell-casting techniques with elements of his own originality. Eight of his works survive today, each with its own distinctive features. This bell best displays the bell form of the late Joseon period. In particular, like the bronze bell of Sutasa Temple, Hongcheon (Treasure), cast in the same year, it has an unusual dangjwa, the striking point where the bell is struck, decorated with an ornate cloud-shaped pattern around it. According to its inscription, this bell was made three months before the Sutasa bell of 1670, making it important material for the study of Sain's artistic world and the community of bell-founders of his time.
