Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Joseon-period bell was cast by the Monk Sain, who was active in the Gyeonggi-do and Gyeongsang-do regions during the reign of King Sukjong. An outstanding eighteenth-century monk and craftsman, the Monk Sain made bells that combined the traditional casting techniques of Silla bells with his own originality. Eight of his works survive today, each with distinct features. Together with the bronze bell of Gimnyongsa Temple in Mungyeong (Treasure), this bell stands out among the Monk Sain's works for its distinctive dangjwa — the striking point where the bell is struck — decorated with an unusual curving floral design, showing both mature skill and originality. Records show it was cast three months after the Gimnyongsa bell, which was made in 1670.
