Bronze Bell Cast by Buddhist Monk Sain - Tongdosa Temple
사인비구 제작 동종 - 통도사 동종 · 思印比丘 製作 銅鍾 - 通度寺 銅鍾

This bell is a Joseon-period bell cast in 1686, the twelfth year of King Sukjong, by the Monk Sain, who was active in the Gyeonggi and Gyeongsang regions. The Monk Sain was an outstanding monk and craftsman of the eighteenth century who combined traditional Silla bell-casting techniques with his own originality. Eight of his works survive today, each showing different characteristics. This bell is unique among them for being the only one carved with the eight-trigram (palgwae) pattern. It is a large bell of outstanding formal beauty, and while it is usual to carve nine raised bosses within the square yeongwak panels on a bell's body, on this bell only a single boss is carved at the centre — a feature that highlights his originality.
