Stone Lantern with Reliefs of the Four Guardian Kings at Beopjusa Temple, Boeun
보은 법주사 사천왕 석등 · 報恩 法住寺 四天王 石燈

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone lantern stands to the west of Palsangjeon Hall at Beopjusa Temple. It is built on an overall octagonal plan, with a three-tiered base below and a roof stone above, centred on the hwasaseok, the fire-housing stone that holds the flame. On the square foundation stone, the lower pedestal stone is carved on each face with ansang, an arch-shaped niche design, and its upper surface bears lotus carvings that mirror those of the upper pedestal stone across the middle pedestal stone between them. The fire-housing stone has windows on four sides, while the other four sides are carved with the Four Guardian Kings, the deities who protect the Buddhist Dharma. The roof stone's eight corners curve up slightly, giving the whole a light, buoyant feel. The style of every part is refined and the carving technique excellent, making this a work representative of Unified Silla stone lanterns. It is thought to have been made after the mid-8th century, when Silla Buddhist art was at its height.
