KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This stele stands at the site of Eokjeongsa Temple and was erected to commemorate the achievements of the Goryeo monk, State Preceptor Daeji. It has a simple form: a rectangular base supports a body stone inscribed with the epitaph, its only ornament being the diagonally cut upper corners of the body stone. The inscription is carved in haeseo, a standard regular script, on all four faces of the body stone. The stele is a transitional work spanning the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods, simple in its formal composition. The inscription records the life of State Preceptor Daeji, from his birth in the fifteenth year of King Chungsuk of Goryeo (1328), through his entry into the priesthood at the age of fourteen, to his death in the second year of King Gongyang (1390), and it praises his character and learning. The text was composed by Bak Ui-jung, written by the monk Seonjin, and carved by Hyegong. The calligraphy is vigorous and strong, and the composition is excellent.
