Three-story Stone Pagoda at Simwonam Hermitage of Geumsansa Temple, Gimje
김제 금산사 심원암 삼층석탑 · 金堤 金山寺 深源庵 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krViewed from Simwonam Hermitage of Geumsansa Temple, this pagoda stands close to the mountaintop to the north. According to the Geumsansa Sajeok (records of the temple's history), Geumsansa Temple was founded in the 600s: in 599, the first year of his reign, King Beop of Baekje issued a royal decree prohibiting the taking of life, and the following year he founded this temple, where thirty-eight monks entered the priesthood. The pagoda has a three-storey body set on a two-tiered foundation, with corner pillars carved into each of the four sides of the body stones. The three roof stones covering the body stones are broad and flat, their upper slopes cut steeply, while the upward curve at each end of the eaves forms a gentle line that captures the character of the Goryeo period well. Only the exposed-plate stone that once supported the crowning ornament remains at the top. Perhaps because it stood deep in the mountains, this beautiful stone pagoda has survived in an almost complete state.
