Flagpole Supports at Manboksa Temple Site, Namwon
남원 만복사지 당간지주 · 南原 萬福寺址 幢竿支柱

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krWhen a temple held a ceremony, a banner called a dang was hung at its entrance. The pole from which this banner hung was called a danggan, and the two stone posts that supported the pole on either side are called danggan-jiju, or flagpole supports. These flagpole supports stand facing each other from east to west at the site of Manboksa Temple. The flagpole that once stood between the two posts no longer survives, but the three holes that once fixed it in place remain. The lower portions and the foundation are currently buried underground, so the structure below cannot be determined. The faces of the two posts are uneven, giving the whole an overall rustic, unrefined appearance with no particular decoration; given this general simplification and plainness, the work is thought to date from the early Goryeo period.
