Stupa of Buddhist Monk Jeunggak at Silsangsa Temple, Namwon
남원 실상사 증각대사탑 · 南原 實相寺 證覺大師塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stupa enshrines the sari (relics) of State Preceptor Hongcheok and is a typical octagonal stupa built on an octagonal plan. Hongcheok was a monk of the late Unified Silla period whose posthumous title was Jeunggak. The foundation of the stupa is built by stacking several tiers of octagonal stones, topped with a stone carved in the shape of a blooming lotus. The carvings on each face are so worn away that they are barely distinguishable, and only the lotus petals on the upper support stone remain clear. The pagoda body consists of a body stone and a roof stone and is relatively low. The body stone has pillar shapes carved to mark its corners, and an arched door is carved on each face, with images of the Four Heavenly Kings guarding the doors carved there in relief. The roof stone clearly depicts the eaves lines of wooden architecture. Judging from its overall form and carving technique, it is presumed to be a work of the late ninth century.
