Three-story Stone Pagoda Outside the North Gate, Naju
나주 북망문 밖 삼층석탑 · 羅州 北望門 밖 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krOriginally located outside the North Gate of Naju, this pagoda was moved in 1915 to the site of the old Naju county office, and then relocated again in 2006 to stand in front of Mireukjeon Hall within the grounds of Simhyangsa Temple. It has the typical form of a three-storey pagoda, its body raised on two tiers of base platforms. Each face of the base platforms carries pilaster-like carvings: on the lower platform these appear only at the corners, while on the upper platform they appear at both the corners and the centre of each face. The body stones and roof stones of the pagoda's storeys are each formed from a single block; the body stones grow proportionally smaller towards the top, giving the whole a slender, agile appearance, and corner pillars are carved in relief on each body stone. The roof stones are thick, each with three-tiered supports on the underside, and their upper surfaces curve up slightly at the eaves. Of the finial only the noban (a flat, dish-shaped base plate) and the bokbal (an ornament shaped like an upturned bowl) survive. Although heavily weathered overall and not an outstanding piece of work, it retains a neat dignity, and the proportions of its parts are pleasing. Judging by its style, it is presumed to have been erected in the late Goryeo period.
