Stone Seated Buddha in Angi-dong, Andong
안동 안기동 석조여래좌상 · 安東 安寄洞 石造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe head of the Buddha seen today was newly attached in a later period; at the time of discovery only the body and pedestal remained. It is also uncertain whether the pedestal on which the statue sits was originally paired with it. Although much of its original form has been lost and its state of preservation is not especially good, the carving of its details is excellent and it holds a stable, settled posture. The robe draped over both shoulders is rendered very realistically down to the sleeve, and its short, continuous folds are lively and assured. The right hand rests on the knee with the fingertips pointing toward the ground: this is the earth-touching gesture (hangma chokjiin), a mudra symbolising the subjugation of demons. Although only the body of the statue remains, its balanced posture, rounded shoulders and softly flowing drapery folds show a vigorous, realistic style that identifies this work as a product of the late Unified Silla period.
