Stone Basin at Bomunsa Temple Site, Gyeongju
경주 보문사지 석조 · 慶州 普門寺址 石槽

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone basin survives at a site known as the location of Bomunsa Temple. The site came to be identified as Bomunsa after the discovery of a roof-tile fragment inscribed with the name 'Bomun (普門)'; traces remain here of the site of a main hall that once enshrined a Buddha image and of a pair of pagodas, along with a flagpole support and the base stone of a stone lantern. This stone basin was carved to hold the water needed for daily use at the temple, and similar vessels are still used in temples today as water containers. It was hollowed from a single large stone to hold water, its base slightly narrower than its rim, with a flat underside. Though large overall, it is plain in form, with no ornamentation inside or out. Judging by its relationship to the surrounding relics, it is presumed to date from the Unified Silla period.
